Message from Minister

Posted by NYCA Blogger on April 22, 2009

The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology will make every effort to involve the Nepalese youths in the march for better environment and address the pressures on climate change so as to improve the living conditions of the people and promote the environmental sustainability of the life-support systems.

Climate change has been one of the major environmental issues as it will have unprecendented impacts to human beings and the life-support systems. Present level of information clearly indicates that climate change will impact on water resources, agriculture, forests and health on which millions of people depend upon for subsistence living. Two major concerns related to “right to development” and “right to survival” have been cropped-up. The need for infrastructure and economic development is of paramount importance to countries like Nepal by adopting clean energy development path. Similarly, impact of climate change has threatened the very survival of the people at large.

Nepal’s economy is agriculture-based and is largely dependent upon the Himalayan water resources and tourism. But temperature rise has accelerated snow melting process. The IPCC AR4 has also mentioned that mountain glaciers and snow cover have significantly declined in the past and has projected to contract further in the future.  The glaciers in the Himalayas are retreating faster than any glaciers in the world. These realities have urged to all of us to address the climate change phenomenon and the Government of Nepal has initiated a number of promotional and data generation activities recently.

I am pleased to note that Nepalese Youth for Climate Action is planning to organize the South Asian Youth Summit on Climate Change in near furtue. I do expect that this Summit will be instrumental for raising common concerns, issues and expectation of the youth of this region on the emerging threats of climate change to which they are not responsible. This will provide opportunities to voice the concerns of the youth in climate change negotiations till Copenhagen and beyond. I do expect for the success of this Summit in advance.

The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology will make every effort to involve the Nepalese youths in the march for better environment and address the pressures on climate change so as to improve the living conditions of the people and promote the environmental sustainability of the life-support systems.
